In a public online conversation, how many replies to a single person can you have before you should move to a private conversation?

@evan
a contextual no limit! some conversations are really good to be had publicly, even if just between two people - I have learned a lot from two domain experts talking about something I'm interested in, if they're comfortable/it makes sense to have gawking onlookers

@jonny @evan Yeah big agree, especially on technical subjects if you can get search indexed afterwards for folks to discover in the future. Also love linking to past conversations when making plans on technical matters.

Kinda why I prefer discussing a lot of stuff on public github issues instead of more private discord channels.

after reading more of the thread, it seems like the question was more re: mediums where there is a much more constrained notion of space, and I think Evan captured this with saying "can the other people in the space opt out" - so in the case of issues that can completely in bounds because there is little expectation of shared space, but if that derails the original issue then it goes out of bounds. another good example is starting threads in slack/discord to get out of channel

also on issues, a friend relayed this wisdom to me that guides my thoughts on decision to use public vs. private mediums that is simple but important: "any problem worth solving is worth solving in public"
