angry about gmail

Have I mentioned that I hate gmail? Their oauth login thing makes logging in with alternative clients a huge pain in the ass, and it's regular login requires a bunch of hoops to jump through and even then it barely works.

Really tired of this shit and that so many orgs require using it for "work email".

The calendar is also a pain.

People capitulating to megacorps ruining open protocols fills me with despair and is a recurring paint point.

Also now I'm seeing more sites that are like "Oh you need to use Chrome to access this" which I thought the web had gotten over for a while now.

Especially annoying when I'm loading via a chromium browser that certainly has whatever Google-pushed feature they want to use anyway.

Did people really give up on progressive enhancement and cross browser interop?

@mauve Whenever I see this I change my user agent and I swear most of the time things work just fine in Firefox.

@mauve started my migration from Gmail to Proton about 10 months ago.

And recently I was convinced once again how right I was. I had one service connected to Gmail. One day I received an email from my internet provider with the subject "If you don't pay for the service, we will give your debt to debt collectors". I was very surprised, checked what happened and it turned out that at some point the service failed to debit the amount from my account and started sending me invoices that I had to pay manually. But Google decided that the invoices were adverts, so it put the email in the appropriate folder and never showed it in Inbox. To put it mildly, I was very angry at that moment. And at the same time glad that it was almost the last service connected with Google and I will never use this shit again

@mauve People want user-friendly tools to manage their data, not a magical AI that knows better what they need

@mauve *pssst*

i tried out the ietf jmap standard using fastmail and it seems more straightforward than any email protocol i have seen.

this was a proof of concept, but the api calls below this line fetch my most recent ten emails: github.com/tylerchilds/braid-k

if you clone the repo, you can see the beginning of a wizard flow than lands on a google inbox inspired interface 😈

@tychi Neat. :o Is there a FOSS or self hosted alternative to fastmail?

angry about gmail

@mauve this is an outdated version, but in the same vein as their webmail client: github.com/jmapio/jmap-demo-we

looks like this would be the backend: github.com/jmapio/jmap-js

all the foss work would be in the jmap org on github: github.com/jmapio

disclosure, i haven’t played with either of those— i’ve just used my raw code from above with my api key from their paid service and that’s the extent, but seems promising.
