It's exhausting watching people constantly shoot themselves in the foot by putting all their energy into platforms that are doomed to screw them over with the exact same patterns of being cheap and easy at first and inevitably shit once you're stuck there.

If the thing you depend on costs a lot of money to operate, and got a lot of "investment" (loans) to get it in everyone's face, it will inevitably screw you over once the true owners want to bleed it dry for cash. The alternatives might not be as "popular", but they're the only option to escape the cycle.

@mauve i try to consider and clear whatever keeps people from alternatives, which are often not designed with that in mind

@rosano The main thing I hear over and over again js yhat they want to be where all the other people are. You can't talk features or dynamics when that's all that matters in the end. 🤷

@mauve @rosano i think about this cognitive dissonance a lot. It seems built into all of us by default.

@lvk @mauve not sure of the best way to get around it but currently into "don't fork the ecosystem" / let people participate in newer things from where they are

@rosano @mauve agreed. Im somewhat in a James Brown-split between promoting pluralism vs big tech alternatives. And then on a higher level Im questioning whether meditation/offline-personal-computing tech might be a better answer to all of it (remember the digital personal organisers?)

@mauve I keep telling folks this as well and they look at me as if I have two heads and not in a “fascinating, he has two heads” but “wtf, you have two heads”.
