So are any of y'all using the Steam Deck as a regular computer? For programming and stuff

@j3rn @lpil Yup! All day every day. Usually with a head mounted display (I use the Rokid Max) or docked. I use it handhend to do web browsing and code reviews.

Been working on making my text to speech scripts work better for coding cause the on screen keyboard ist great for it.

love the keybinding customization. Got my setup with most functions at a my fingertips

@mauve @j3rn @lpil Ooh, the rokid max look super interesting. Have you written about how well they work with programming?

I was considering buying a Pico VR for this, but the rokid max seems way better for that.

@clementd @j3rn @lpil Hmm, net yet but I really should. I find the best part has been the ability to lay on ny back while coding and generally get more comfortable. Sometimes the text needs to be zoomed a little and the glasses need to be adjusted a little to be able to see the edges of the scrern properly. The diopters are very convenient as a glasses haver and friend of glasses havers :P

@mauve @j3rn @lpil Indeed. Do you use the screen covers, or are the displays still readable while seeing outside?

(I have a few questions, lmk if I'm bothering you)

@clementd Honestly it'd be hard to get me to shut up once I've started 🤣

If I look at very bright stuff it can be hard to see the text since I have everything in dark mode, but even then I don't really use the covers. I just sit down and look at the grass or lay on my back and look at a tree. Sometimes I walk around with my partner and do code reviews while they help keep me from bumping into stuff or getting hit by a car 😁 It's a great way to get weird looks tho.

@mauve I assume you use the floating screen mode and not the spatial mode?

I'm thinking about how to use it in a train. I already have a small keeb, I'm wondering about whether using my existing laptop or something smaller instead.

@clementd Ah! I don't use the Rokid app or their spatial stuff at all. The glasses end up just being an external display. Train is defs a good use case. I use a Rii i8+ as my main keyboard and it's been great. Especiallt not needing a surface to place it on. defs slower to type than my KB380 tho. aliexpress.com/item/1005004629

@mauve I have a ferris sweep which is great for small surfaces.

I could set it on top of my closed laptop. I just wish MacOS was less keyboard-hostile

@clementd Nice, yeah. I wonder if rokid will make a MacOS app for virtual desktops eventually the way Xreal did. Also! Before my steam deck I used to use my intel nuc with an apple magic trackpad and a portable monitor. The gestures were pretty useful there.

@clementd Defs something smaller would be easiest imo. Even a samsung phone with DeX can be convenient

@mauve@mauve.moe Last question and then I'll be quiet: can you do long sessions with it or does it tire your eyes? Do you see it as a complement to a regular monitor or as a full on replacement?

@clementd It depends tbh. I think the longest I've done is about 6 hours straight and it's a little more tiring than my ultra wide but not too much more. I use it as a complement to my deck's screen for when I don't wanna be looking down at my lap.
