I caved and got the beefier GPD Win 4 with 32GB of RAM so I can stop suffering from OOM errors killing applications several times a day. TT_TT
@mauve what os are you running on gpd win 4?
i tried holo iso for a day but have been using manjaro sway since and no complaints
@tychi I did Chimera Os for a bit but got fed up with it being made for gaming rather than dev. Currently running a barebones EndevourOS with a niri-based wayland setup I've been slowly putting together. I'm loving it! It's really just VSCode / Element / Thunderbird that are eating an unreasonable amount of RAM compared to everything else on my system 😅
@tychi I never use it for gaming BTW. Just development and the odd video watching. 😅
@mauve i primarily use it for dev testing— i love that it has like every input in one unit
i don’t use it for gaming much, but it is the primary console in the house, typically docked and my wife uses it for stardew valley primarily
i do love how good steam support has become on the arch tree.
i also use it in conjunction with a video mixing board to be
both the camera monitor and fourth hdmi to do overlays/compositing for the live video mixes i dabble with
@tychi That last bit is super cool. Have you looked into customizing the keyboad bindigs for the gamepad? I found the defaults lacking and ended up fixing some bugs in this python script I found which lets you remap them.
@mauve thanks! i use it combined with a black magic iso mini pro that does the heavy lifting for video
i haven’t configured the game pad, but that’s super cool! i would like to get it optimized for browsing— my personal ergonomics have been fairly de-prioritized the past couple years though, but i’m definitely going to toy with that script at some point— thanks for sharing :)
@mauve are you using it with AR/VR glasses with it?
@skryking Kinda? When I'm out and about I usually use my Viture Pro XR as a head mounted display. It doesn't really do XR/AR sadly, it's pretty much just a monitor. One hell of a monitor though!
@mauve damn i gotta get on that. And I don't think they're being killed for me by oom, either several apps are very buggy (not unlikely) or my memory is getting corrupted. Should really run a memtest
I'm genuinely so excited to not have to worry about RAM all the time. It's like a weight lifted off my chest.
