We can't have meaningful decentralization when identity is tightly coupled with a specific always online server accessible on the internet. Even if you self host (which most won't).

Ultimately, someone has their hand on the plug. The question is how many people, and how far do you need to go to replace whatever function pulling the plug destroyed.

@mauve agreed..an alternative to paid DNS would be nice, because all my selfhosted decentralized magic (email/subdomains) depend on a bankaccount ☹️

@lvk I'm an eternal proponent of non human readable cryptographic keys and social graph based name search and verification. 😅

@mauve genuinely thinking keypairs with better UX is the best strategy, everyone keeps trying to make other stuff work for better UX but if it can improve we can simplify greatly
