The problem with new doc martins is that instead of breaking in, they just break.

One pair I bought in the 90's just fell apart within a few days of wearing them. I took them back to the Doc Martin store and the guy told me it was because they were made in USA, so he went and got me the same pair made in the UK (for free) and those lasted a long time with no problem.

@mauve its cuz they were sold out, but! the original producers still make shoes if the original high quality!
