will never understand why anyone would want the fedi to go "mainstream"; as though there's not already plenty of mainstream social networks for people who want to feel connected to everyone in the world
lean in to the weird little server vibes where you can chat shit and flirt with your friends imo; destroy the concept of "the fediverse" as a mappable monoculture and embrace how you can have fun just seeing a tiny 1% of posts from your cozy corner instead
once you can learn to enjoy bobbing along in a partial little tributary where your mates are too, then the "mainstream" looks way less appealing
like we have a load of problems to address in the fedi but they mainly boil down to many servers being white supremacist and eurocentric as fuck; not being "mainstream" enough is not an issue that needs to be solved to make the fedi an interesting place to spend time
people are replying to this suggesting that because mainstream socials are owned by nazis and are shit then it's the fedi's responsibility to step up and become mainstream
I don't disagree that mainstream socials are owned by nazis and are shit in many ways but that doesn't mean the fedi has to fill a gap there, those things do not have to be connected! perhaps it's simply impossible to have a "mainstream" social media that isn't quite shit, perhaps that's not a worthwhile goal!
@dumpsterqueer IMO we need more people off of social media and back into hanging out IRL. If the mainstream platforms died and we had some small niche spaces left for the weirdos then the world would be a better place.
