Looks like Jitsi started requiring accounts to start chat rooms. Anyone have alternatives for open source ish video calls?
- no need for registering an account
- Using webrtc in browsers
- firefox support
- "pretty" urls like "/call/my-cusom-room-name"
- open source ish and self hostable
@eater @mauve that's the correct answer. The mandatory account thing is only enforced on Jitsi's own instance, but other servers just let you create a chatroom normally ;)
I don't know how up to date it is but : https://jitsi.github.io/handbook/docs/community/community-instances/
@mauve that would be fun :p
@mauve I love mumble myself and there is a browser client. It just feels more countercultural.
@mauve bigBlueButton is self hostable but idk of a public instance
@mauve I was also using https://talky.io/. Not sure about its status atm
@mauve ikr so annoying! tou could always deploy an older version of jitsi?
@aynish Would _probably_ like Webrecorder to switch from Discord to Element / Matrix eventually but god is it ever janky sometimes :/
After being in the tomesh server for 7 years I’ve seen it improve but have also just gotten used to the jank... makes it hard to recommend to others?
@aynish I think there’s a bug where if you don’t read every message in every thread in the room you’re in the room still shows unread messages? This one is particularly frustrating haha
Also push notifications are really bad at syncing between devices and the iOS client is still wildly slow. They showed off fixes for that but I guess it hasn’t made it to prime time yet?
IDK if any work has been done on moderation but last I checked that system was pretty messy...
@aynish Once these things are fixed tho, I’d make the case for it... I want to like Matrix lol
@hank yeah I agree with all of these and have similarly gotten used to them
but element call is its own repo / thing as I understand, you don't need to be on matrix to use it
@aynish Oh really? I asumed it used Matrix for identity? If it's wholly seperate that's pretty neat!
@hank I think it does use matrix for identity, but that's totally optional, similar to jitsi (which doesn't use matrix for identity) i haven't really tried it, but it does appear tob e that way on their beta too: https://call.element.io/
@aynish Yo pretty neat! We should try it sometime :D
@hank I'd be keen! :3
@mauve What do you think of something like huddle01? It’s a web3 VC funded thing (I personally never used it). They’re working on dRTC.
@mauve Oh, it’s not completely open-sourced (only SDKs) :/
It’s a no no for me.
@mauve self-hosted jitsi?
