Apple has announced some SWEEPING changes coming to the App Store in the EU with iOS 17.4:
- Alternative app marketplaces
- 0% commission for apps sold outside the App Store, with 0% commission on alternative payment methods (!)
- Third-party browser engines now allowed (!!)
- Game streaming now allowed on the App Store
We have an extensive summary of all the changes on MacStories, with more to come shortly: https://www.macstories.net/news/apple-details-how-it-plans-to-comply-with-the-eus-digital-markets-act/

It's *almost* enough to make me praise apple. I think if we zoom out and look at the trend it's really positive. I hope it provides pressure for positive changes on android as well
@mixmix @mauve @staltz @viticci @agregore In the end it seems they're geofencing EU and it only applies to them
Till now, any local privacy protection (EU, California) lifted all boats, so to speak. It's expensive to have exceptions
But now apple is willing to constantly police who's EU and who's not, and deliver different experiences on the fly
I mean they have the resources and motivation. But it means a way more fractured environment
@mauve @staltz @viticci @mixmix @agregore Yessss. That's the spirit.
Of course we need to read the fine lines (apple is sneaky) but it's very promising.
