conspiracy theory

another tangent (this may actually exist, let me know):

how come the UN (or some other multinational entity) does not offer a search engine that is not tied to any state, to any government, to any corporation?

how come there isnt a search engine that is a public good, a public service?

and dont mean the code... I mean a fully funded entity committed to indexing and cataloguing the internet with no profit motive.

Feels goos to be getting back into my usual parts of the codebase after wresting with a bunch of other bits for a while.

I will happily accept the parts of this proposed legislation that requires social media companies to reduce or eliminate algorithmic timelines, endless scrolling, functioning visibility restrictions and other controls that benefit everyone.

I actually think that such legislation would be widely popular, and would eliminate like 80% of the harmful effects of mainstream social media without any of the catastrophic impacts of forcing identity verification everywhere.

@ticky Congrats! I'm debating whether to get it right away or wait to see reviews from regular consumers once they actually get them 🤔

@vampiress It's super annoying if you use a privacy preserving browser or something without JavaScript. There's also the proof of work based things that are less sketchy and make it more expensive for bots to scrape carelessly.

Kinda disappointed that one guy didn't actually fight a chimp but it's probably for the best that it got cancelled.

That clove of pickled garlic might have been a bit too much right before sleep. 🤤😵

@kepeken The ones I'm looking at are in the 300-400 CAD range. The value would be more in the data on the phone and camera quality than pure retail. I'm on a Samsung S21 as my daily driver right now. Unsure which eink phone I'll get but I'm gonna find the cheapest one that works :P I can ping you when I figure it out if you'd like.

Considering getting an eink phone for real as a "travel phone" so I can get better battery and not worry as much about losing it.

@craigoverend Heck yeah. May I see what it looks like? I usually do minimal black and white with purple highlights because it works best for translucent video glasses when I'm out and about.

Is profiting from stock via dividends still a thing or are we stuck gambling with stock price fluctuations?

Lol, the site has blocked me for… what exactly? Having a fingerprinting-resistant browser? I should probably change my user agent to ChatGPT or something.

@mosseri It would be great if *all* the AI features were behind a paywall so that it would be easier to avoid them by default.

I don't need those new gambling apps cause I gamble every time I choose to fill up on gas or wait for a better price.

@vampiress Right now orgs seem to be heading towards paywalls that agents (and likely humans) will need to use to access any content. CDNs like Cloudflare are leading the way. It's unfortunate.

Every line of code you own is a liability. Adding more of it faster is a great way to paint yourself into a corner.

Emulating a sync API over an async RPC channel is hell. This is exactly why I don't like "magical" APIs and frameworks that prioritize "ease of use" while hiding details.
