Hey folks, I've seen a lot of talk going around about adblockers lately. I worked in the advertising technology and security industry for five years and the one core piece of advice I have is:
Holy fuck never give an advertiser your data. You cannot believe how bad it is. Don't. I run three layers of ad block protection and I'd run more if it was feasible. If you want to support creators give them money.
@jonny I think you mostly need lots of money
@babe a robot vacuum doesnt need to be a surveillance camera with ai. it doesnt even need wifi. i promise you. why will no one believe me *crying*
@tychi Firefox beta android 10. Seems refreshing got me past the dialog. Sadly I couldn't figure out how to use the app so will need to find time another day.
@mWare What is Solo? :o I don't think I've heard of it before.
K, gonna set some time this weekend to set up that pixelfed instance for #ottawa creatives.
I really need to find the corner of the maker community that's other disabled people creating their own assistive tech
Tech people seriously have no idea what the average person knows about their computer or what they do on the internet and how it effects them.
......
Edited: I don't get much attention on Mastodon and it seems like a lot from people I don't interact with normally, so check out my ko-fi and check out my art, and projects?
@beka_valentine I find setting it to sort by recent first sidesteps the algo and only shows matching videos, usually it turns up nothing given my niche interests
@technobaboo interesting :o I think one thing I'm not a fan of for my steam deck is that it's sorely lacking in usb ports while I'm on the go :P
@technobaboo what are you using for hand tracking btw? Is there something loke the leap motion which I can have on a desk or chest mounted or something?
In case folks aren't aware, the Internet Archive now has a scholar version with a huge collection of academic work available.

@djsundog and I are launching a project to build federated, open source, #bandcamp alternative.
We're building this because we need it. We're doing it ourselves because it will become a part of the larger media production and distribution ecosystem we have planned.
We welcome other open source projects, and we might even contribute to a few of them, but for the next several months, this is our full time gig.

The wave of new AI tools comes with a ton of new #privacy concerns.
A new website where you can upload a photo to identify people shows it’s not limited to those who use AI themselves. And it shows why you should avoid giving your data to random companies.
Do these developments worry you? They worry us..
