Wish I thought to order this phone holder thingie way before Lunar New Year. 😅

I get my computer setup is janky as heck but it really pays off! I'm gonna switch up my main compute module this year but my screen/monitor/battery components will still be usable! Ship of thesius as a computing platform.

@TonyVladusich @johncarlosbaez when giving a research talk, rather than saying "that's a great question" all the time, I always wanted to institute a policy of giving the questions a score out of 10 before answering. Haven't done it yet, but one day...

@jj_3 I found the time based search at least only showed results for things that contained my search string instead of "popular videos vaguely related to your search string's semantic meaning"

@ligaturerecords The bit about it needing way more training data than humans is very compelling.

Youtube removed the ability to sort search results by "recent first" which was the last non-algorithm based way to get results. Now it's all useless BS and clickbait.

My son bought a second-hand Windows 11 PC for games, and has been having BSOD issues with the graphics card since he got it. Out of desperation he tried installing Bazzite on it, which I encouraged, but was also trying not to get his hopes up, telling him that the some things might not work. But he reports that "absolutely everything works better than Windows".
I suggested he use KDE for the desktop, and he is blown away about how good everything looks, and how easy the user experience is. He has used Linux for a bit probably 7 or 8 years ago when he used a salvaged laptop at uni that had Ubuntu on it, and he remembers that being a bit janky and frustrating, but now he's decided that he'll wipe the Windows partition and stay with Linux.
So keep it up, clever people that are making Linux distros and software, you're winning.

Recommend telling your kids that back in the day the length of time it took to dial a phone number was proportionate to the sum of its digits

@brandon Oh yeah, Daemon was fun. i remember reading the AR stuff and thinking "Yeah I should make this". I found the sequel was a bit too fantasy-y for me tbh. Change Agent by Daniel Suarez has been a big source of inspo. "Tea from an empty cup" was a bit of a trippy read this year too.
