I'm so old, I remember when software that spread into the wild and infiltrated other people's computers and did harmful things to them that the users didn't ask it to was called "malware" instead of "AI" and the perpetrators were prosecuted instead of given billions in venture capital and government contracts.

Running a Mastodon server is becoming increasingly problematic due to GenAI.

There’s multiple different things happening, including but not limited to:

- very aggressive scraping of user content and block evasion, with the resource costs that come with it

- AI agents aggressively trying to register accounts and evade restrictions

- rising cost of RAM - Mastodon is memory hungry, RAM is really expensive now

It’s odd to experience first hand, it’s like being consumed by.. a void.

My DNS implementation fetches the entire server, not just the address.

Latency improves with future requests due to server caching in my basement.

@Unixbigot FPGA development is a constant tension between chips which are easy to make work with open source toolchains but require hardware knowledge to integrate into a design you can connect to anything, versus designs which are relatively easy to obtain in preconfigured devboards but use proprietary IDEs so horrific they become a primary roadblock to your plans

That phase of software development when you're preparing for an initial release is crazy. It's like packing for a trip when you don't know how long you'll be gone and the weather forecast for your destination keeps changing wildly. It always seems like there's something else to do, and just when you think you've got it all taken care of, you think of something else. There's also this feeling of foreboding, like am I forgetting something?
