The BBC's experiment with Mastodon is pathbreaking in English-language news -- a major organization setting up its own instance. They've really thought this through. Key language:

"We're using social.bbc as the domain, so you can be sure these accounts are genuinely from the BBC. And by linking to and from the BBC’s website, we have verified our identity on Mastodon."

I wonder if the whole #AI thing will finally convince artists that modern #copyright regime was never meant to protect *them*.

It was meant to protect the middlemen. The Amazons, the Spotifies, the Sonys, the Disneys. The film studios, the publishing houses.

Now the middlemen figured out they own basically all of art, and that they can just train a computer on that, to replace artists with a piece of software.

And then stop paying artists even the pittance they were being paid so far.

🧵

Perhaps it was never about the money, it is about exerting the power, making others break, and inflicting pain.

As brilliant screenwriter, David Slack can make a simple image tell a clear story below.

I have Ruffle, a chrome extension installed, and on many sites flash content simply works and yes, newgrounds etc are still around. Newgrounds has it's own flash player even.

Neat! I love how we're getting a new class of mobile devices with these glasses based things like the XReal Beam.

I'm excited to be able to get a lil compute puck that I can run Linux + @stardustxr on as my primary device.

Hey folks, I'm thinking of starting a / / based instance for and

I think it'd be a great intro to different types of folks to the that aren't necessarily into the twitter-style on mastodon.

Any thoughts for names? I'm thinking of some sort of `.art` or `.ca` domain.

gender, non-binary identity woes

Kinda excited for the day I'll get to hang out in spaces where it/its pronouns are taken seriously instead of with eye boggling.

I think I only have like one person in my life that consistently uses them and it also uses it/its pronouns. It's like how when I came out as a they/them I had to start constantly proving myself, but now it's even with other queer people. 😅

I can see how it'd be hard given how novel it'd be for most folks to encounter though.

Oopsie, looks like my server filled up overnight and now I need to do more clearning. :x

Looks like I'll want to do a more aggressive purge of old attachments. Maybe I should really upgrade to 4+ so I can use the `tootctl accounts prune` API.

Also I think this speaks to there being merit in caching more stuff client side and using content addressing + p2p instead of large central caches.

I see people question @pixelfed over @Mastodon, and that's fine (I ❤️ Mastodon, sent from Mastodon)

However I think it's important to note that Pixelfed has Stories, Collections, Portfolios and much more!

You can post pics on Twitter, but Flickr, 500px and Instagram still thrive!

Portfolios: portfolio.pixelfed.social/dans

Collections: pixelfed.social/c/530360750719

Use whatever best fits you, and know that @pixelfed + @Mastodon work great together ✨

Buh, house hunting is stressful. You gotta give them a bunch of your personal information and finances and then sit there twiddling your thumbs seeing if you actually get it.

Really hope I get accepted for some of these! Really excited to have a proper washer/dryer in my unit so laundry can be less of a pain. :P

I wish my terminal was more like browser dev tools so I could see what files were being accessed and what network requests or syscalls were happening + ways of intercepting and modifying these things.

also! Hot take but the js console is easier to use than bash. 😅

not to sound like a huge communist but I don’t think millions of us should have to die hungry and in debt so a couple dudes with really really really big boats can have really really really really big boats

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

If you're still using Chrome for performance reasons:
- Firefox is now faster than Chrome out-of-the-box
- Firefox uses less memory than Chrome
- Contrary to Chrome, Firefox does not restrict Ad blockers, which will make your browsing experience much faster (and safer).

Whoops, my single user instance with 150 gb of storage got filled up again. 🙃

Found this blog post for pruning data and it's helped.
