Here's a video (sorry for the quality) of 2 Capyloon devices sharing data thanks to IPFS:
- the laptop "uploads" the capybara image to its local ipfs node, and generates a QR Code with the ipfs:// url.
- the phone scans the QR Code to get the ipfs:// url, and loads it as any other web page.
- since both devices discovered each other over mDNS, no data left the local network!

@pauldaoust Wow wow wow thatms amazing. To for the info, definately gonna look into this more! Now if only these models disn't take a huge amount lf computation to run 🤪

@pauldaoust Interesting, what sort of overlap would you anticipate? I don't think I know anything about them. :o

Are there any open frameworks out there to train gpt bots based on your social media posts and chat logs?

Could be a cool way to do async communication in VR. Infodump a bunch of your thoughts into a prompt, then attach it to an avatar and send it over to someone as a message.

Hi. It would help me a lot if I could get a HEAP of responses to this poll. The goal is to get a decent enough sample so results are predictive of the wider user-base right now. I dislike asking for boosts but this is SCIENCE... or something. (Thanks.)

How do you use Mastodon MOST of the time?

On a phone, or other touch screen device?

OR

On a device with a keyboard like a laptop or desktop computer?

(If it's half and half choose the middle option.)

Critical Distance, a non-profit I volunteer for on the board of directors, needs help. We have been archiving and contextualising online games writing for 13 years. We are asking for help to allow us to continue operating, and perhaps even invest in building longer term resilience. I'd be very grateful for any help spreading the word: gofundme.com/f/critdistance

@GeeksLoveDetail It's when you make a post that's referencing a tweet you saw but don't actually link to it.

I think the purpose is not to draw attention directly to the post and not to have the post author directly pay attention to what you have to say? Might be a plausible deniability thing too.

So wait, do we call it subtooting instead of subtweeting here?

Must be amazing to not have sensory processing issues / needs 😭

I feel like people without them don't appreciate the magnitude of the discomfort that simple things can cause.

Update on the growth of #mastodon in the last months. After the big wave of new accounts on Nov 17th, the growth seems steady for the last week at around 50k new accounts/users per day. Only in the last couple of weeks, 1M new accounts were added. At this rhythm, #mastodon will get 1.5M accounts/users per month.

When people build things which are
of the people, by the people, for the people,
others come afterward seeking to coopt what was built to gain control for political forces, and/or profit.

There are a few ways to fight this, but only one sure way…
make things unscalable.
make them open, easily replicable for individuals and even small groups, but worthless for huge centralized projects.

example, Gopher.
small, fast, light, effective at organizing and presenting information.
nearly impossible to serve ads over, stream porn over, or gather effective metadata from.

if you want to prevent centralized control, build with technology that is useless to centralization.

K, I really need to sit down and do a writeup about preindexed p2p databases!

Reading "War against the weak" by Edwin Black. It's so painful but seeing where the seeds of eugenics sprouted and how it has grown to shape where we are now feels very important.

Also, @agregore not having support for tabs means that I've been thinking more about windows on their own and wanting to have more smaller windows accross my screen instead of more big ones.

Show thread

One frustrating bit of people making web apps is that not enough apps consider using multiple windows by default.

E.g. Element would be nicer for me if I could pop out the spaces list from the threads, or view threads in new windows.

I think tabs and assuming full screen viewing contribute to devs not going outside that box.

@victor Yessss. When I saw them talking about it I got super excited.

It seems that the grant they they got to implement federation didn't end up being successful however. 😅 I'm just waiting here for it to get done so I can yeet right into it.

I want to migrate off github, but I don't want to move to another centralized instance.

Federated or bust. I want people to bring their own accounts from their instances instead of making yet another gitlab account just to open an issue.

Accounts in general should have to go. 🤪
