Reading "War against the weak" by Edwin Black. It's so painful but seeing where the seeds of eugenics sprouted and how it has grown to shape where we are now feels very important.

Also, @agregore not having support for tabs means that I've been thinking more about windows on their own and wanting to have more smaller windows accross my screen instead of more big ones.

One frustrating bit of people making web apps is that not enough apps consider using multiple windows by default.

E.g. Element would be nicer for me if I could pop out the spaces list from the threads, or view threads in new windows.

I think tabs and assuming full screen viewing contribute to devs not going outside that box.

I want to migrate off github, but I don't want to move to another centralized instance.

Federated or bust. I want people to bring their own accounts from their instances instead of making yet another gitlab account just to open an issue.

Accounts in general should have to go. 🤪

Just as medieval nobles had no shortage of people telling them that they were pious despite their wars and mistresses, so does the modern CEO class have no shortage of sycophants assuring them that they are very intelligent.

The desired virtues may change, but the nature of power does not, not really.

it's hard to explain to people that software is a fundamentally communal activity because they're like "ohh you're a dev! you must be so smart!" and like. it literally does not matter how smart i am. none of this works at all unless we can collaborate across time and space.

Big rumblings in the expansion of the #Fediverse have been happening recently.

#Tumblr has already promised to implement #ActivityPub (the protocol Mastodon uses), which will mean you can follow Tumblr accounts from here and vice versa. And today we a learning that #Flickr is also considering it!

This will be a massive expansion, which obviously carries some uncertainties, but I, for one, welcome our new federation partners.

This is the way the internet is supposed to work.

I wish we could rely on governments or companies or other institutions to be there for us. But increasingly we will not be able to. *We have to do it ourselves.*

Housing, community safety, cyclist/pedestrian infrastructure, local journalism, education, preventing drug overdoses, running social media…It is all up to us. There is no one else.

It's a dizzying realization. It's terrifying…but also incredibly empowering.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Ooo. I'm thinking of taking a small vacation from work for a couple of weeks in December.

Maybe I'll finally have time to migrate away from Pop OS to something that doesn't use GNOME. :P Been having a bunch of trouble since Gnome 42 came out and all my themes broke + it started freezing up.

Any KDE things out there that have decent support for Intel machines?

IMO Clients for all the fedi apps should prefer to use the ActivityPub Client-Server API as good praxis regardless of the backend they might be tailored to. 🤷

For those that have been seeing me ramble about this every chance I get. We've submitted the initial PR for our spec.

This is a great building block for building databases which use sparsely replicated indexes to quickly load just the data that's needed.

Once we get some indexing going on top of these things, waiting for stuff to sync will be something you barely need to think about in P2P social apps! 🎉

Technology isn’t about computers. Technology is about people.

@hank This website should just be part of the unicode spec!

The fact that there are a bunch of 😻😹 cat emoji with different expression seems to beg for the same being the same of the 😈 devil emoji.

Sometimes I'm happy devil, but a devil do be feeling other emotions sometimes.

Ooo, just had a great idea for how to make 3d graph layout easier for flowchart-like constructs.

Basically, what if you use a regular format like graphviz for your usual 2d layout stuff. But then if you place something in a subgraph it goes on a different `z` layer. Such that you can have a bunch of layers but can still have that flowchart arrangement. E.g. you could link up and down between two layers and the nodes would be placed close together.

Days since I've almost accidentally summoned a demon while reading a distributed systems paper: 0

Juggling a billion projects is hard. Gonna try to reduce hours next month as much as I can to give my body and mind a break.
